Whole-Person Care, Real Life Recovery
Based on the latest data and best practices, we approach recovery from an integrated point of view. That means addressing a person’s physical, emotional, and social needs together. Substance use is often just the tip of the iceberg, and real recovery means tending to underlying, systematic challenges. That’s why we bring together medical care, mental health support, community connection, and safe housing all under one roof.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
At The Courage Center, we offer a comprehensive 12-week intensive outpatient program (IOP) to support people in recovery from substance use disorder (SUD). Our approach is community-rooted and person-centered, combining clinical therapy, medical care, housing, and peer support in one single, supportive framework.

Recovery Housing
The Courage Network operates seven housing programs, all of which are safe and supportive of everybody in recovery, no matter their pathway toward mental health and sobriety. Our houses in Gorham and Westbrook offer temporary loding for people participating in our IOP. Our houses in Biddeford and Sanford offer longer term accommodations for people in recovery who are living and working in those communities. At all of our houses, residents live like any other member of the local community. These recovery residences are designed to be a sober environment where participants can feel like everyday people, not patients in an institution. Residents can expect to be living independently while also being provided with accountability and support to reach their goals. All Courage House recovery residences proudly adhere to the full set of ethics and standards put forward by the National Alliance of Recovery Residences.

Medical Care
The Courage Center offers medical care to all of our participants, including basic primary care, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), and psychiatric services. Licensed providers also can send out test samples, make referrals, and support the treatment of chronic health conditions.
Peer Support
Many of our staff members are in long-term recovery themselves. We know firsthand how hard this work is—and we’re here to walk with you. Our staff helps navigate local employment, benefits, housing resources, and referrals to support participants’ long-term success after completing the program.
Program Requirements
To enroll, participants must:
- Be 18+ and not on the sex offender registry.
- Have active MaineCare (we’re working to expand coverage soon).
- Commit to full participation in all housing and clinical expectations for the program you're in.
- Consent to random drug screening.
- Engage in respectful, community-minded behavior.
- Active substance use at intake? No problem—we’ll help get you to detox first and then walk with you from there.
